Anderson: Collected Praise

I am the proud owner of a shiny red long-sleeve Champions League Anderson jersey. I make it a point to slip his name into pretty much every post I write for this blog (I was forced to valiantly defend him in the comments section upon first mention). I excitedly talk him up to anyone who will listen, and even to those who are generally uninterested, frequently citing this brilliantly titled article. I nervously anticipate every teamsheet, hoping that he will start. I make gleeful high-pitched noises when I watch him work his magic on the pitch. My mind begins to spin when I think about the sheer potential. He is my proverbial boy.

I also spend the day after United matches scouring the internet for articles, player ratings and any other tidbits on the Brazilian wunderkind. So instead of going on about how I think he is going to blossom into one of the world's finest, I'll let others do the talking. From professional pundits to pint-swilling punters, a collection of some of my favorite comments in the wake of United's mauling of Arsenal on Saturday are after the jump. And judging from the accompanying photograph, young Anderson is flattered.

Those comments about how he's going to be better in a couple years are really irritating.

It is the unalienable right of a football fan to get excited about promising young players on the team they support.

You've had your turn with the emergence of Fabregas and the Arsenal youngsters in general.

Or, by "irritation" do you mean that it bothers you that he is going to be so good (read: better than Fabregas) in a few year's time?

Arsenal supporters would like to think the player has peaked at an early age, and will soon be embarking on a steady decline.

Anderson is a great talent; there is no doubt. But no one can know how he will be in two years' time.

Comparison to other players is not possible because they are all unique. You cannot say Anderson is better than Scholes; not least because of age difference but because of the way each plays the game. When Arsenal beat Juventus in the first leg of their CL ties in 2006, Fabregas outshone Patrick Vieira and a lot of people said then that Fabregas was "better" than Vieira. That was only one game. True, Vieira in general will not be able to keep up with Fabregas but it's just a fact of life. Everyone has his nemeses.

Football is a team game and in terms of their respective contribution to their teams, both Anderson and Fabregas are crucial to Man. U. and Arsenal respectively, or in Anderson's case, he will be crucial beginning in next season. I can understand your excitement about Anderson.

By the way, you have succeeded in winding me up :-)
